Zeolites are hydrated aluminosilicate minerals containing alkali and alkaline earth elements. Although more than 30 kinds of zeolites occur in nature, only about six occur abundantly in sedimentary rocks. Zeolites have a framework structure enclosing interconnected cavities occupied by large cations and water molecules.

A review of structural work on Linde X and Linde Y, on ionexchanged faujasite, and on ionexchanged and dehydrated was provided by Smith (1988). Properties of natural and synthetic faujasite were discussed by Stamires (1973). Faujasite corresponds to the most open framework of all natural zeolites.

The International Natural Zeolite Association (INZA) was officially organized in 2005 from the former International Committee on Natural Zeolites (ICNZ). The ICNZ was created as an ad hoc organization at Zeolite 76, the International Conference on the Occurrence, Properties, and Utilization of Natural Zeolites, held in Tucson, Arizona, June 614, 1976.
