Plans include a small stripmall with a few shops along the banks of New River, a restaurant and/or lodging facilities in the parking lot area just above and overlooking where the old mill stood, and possibly a new fire department building in one corner of the parking lot.
Fries used his political and social connections to bring the railroad out to his new town so that supplies could be shipped in and finished fabrics shipped out. For 85 years, the mill was the lifeblood of the region, creating jobs for thousands of people and bringing in capital.

The Fries mill was the countys only large industrial mill in 1911, and its operation attracted other professionals to the town such as attorneys and physicians. The succession of operators and boarders at the houses reflects the changing and mobile population during the mill towns period of growth.
In 1900, Col. Francis Henry Fries dammed the New River and built a mill to spin cotton into cloth. They named the town after him. In 1988, Robert B. Pamplin gave away the dam and shut down the mill.
